How Collaborative Custody Works
In a traditional self-custody model, you alone bear the responsibility (and the risk) of storing your private keys. Apex’s collaborative custody bridges the gap between pure self-custody and institutional-grade security by using a 2-of-3 multisignature (multisig) setup in partnership with Theya. You always stay in control, while we provide professional backup and infrastructure support.
Key Generation & Distribution
- You generate and hold one key on your hardware wallet.
- Theya holds one key, which is used for co-signing with your wallet.
- Apex holds a backup key in an offline, geographically separate vault.
Transaction Authorization
- Two signatures are required to move funds: yours, plus Theya’s. Apex’s key cannot be used to sign regular transactions.
- You stay in the driver’s seat—no transaction can occur without your initiation.
- Apex’s key is strictly backup-only; we cannot move your Bitcoin unilaterally.
Seamless Recovery & Support
- If you lose or damage your key, Apex assists you in restoring it using your own backups; if that’s not possible, our recovery process begins.
- Once you initiate recovery proceedings and after the time-locked delay built into Apex’s infrastructure, our backup key and Theya’s key re-enable access. We then set up a new vault with fresh keys alongside you.
